The stationary robot is expected to interact with a small group of students enrolled in Woz Ed STEAM courses. According to the district, Sally will use locally stored, district-approved instructional material to answer questions, reinforce lessons and encourage students to work through problems rather than simply providing completed answers.

New York State United Teachers responded publicly on July 23.

NYSUT President Melinda Person argued that students need relationships with human educators rather than lifelike machines and said the union would explore ways to oppose what it considers a “thoughtless expansion” of the technology in Salamanca and elsewhere in the state.

The district disputes the suggestion that the project is replacing educators. Superintendent Mark Beehler has described the robot as comparable to a classroom computer terminal and said teachers will remain responsible for instruction.

Sally is designed to remain seated rather than move around the school. The robot can display facial expressions and upper-body movements while communicating with students in a conversational manner.

The district says the technology does not search the open internet. Instead, it draws responses from information intentionally stored within the system.

When the robot does not possess the information needed to answer a question, it is supposed to acknowledge that limitation and encourage the student to consult another educational resource.

This structure distinguishes Sally from widely used generative-AI systems that produce responses using large external models and internet-scale databases.

The district presents that limitation as a safety feature.

The Robot Will Not Operate as an Independent Teacher

Some reports have referred to Sally as a robot teacher. That description risks overstating the district’s plan.

Salamanca says the system is an instructional resource or teacher’s assistant. Human educators will remain in the classroom and maintain responsibility for lessons, student supervision and educational decisions.

Beehler told the Times Union that the device cannot replace a teacher and is essentially a computer that sits in a chair. He also said the district sought to create a controlled form of artificial intelligence rather than allowing students to rely freely on external systems such as ChatGPT or Claude.
