In this edition of our Veteran-Owned Business Spotlight, we're highlighting Ranger Up, a veteran-owned apparel and lifestyle company that has become one of the most recognizable military-inspired brands in the United States.

This article is based on publicly available information and is intended to educate readers about the company's history and business journey. It is not a product review or endorsement.

From the Army to Entrepreneurship

Ranger Up was founded in 2006 by Nick Palmisciano, a former U.S. Army infantry officer, along with Tim Kennedy, an Army Special Forces veteran and former professional mixed martial artist. The idea began while Palmisciano was pursuing his MBA at Duke University, where he started creating military-themed T-shirts for ROTC students and fellow service members. What started as a small side project quickly attracted attention within the military community and eventually grew into a full-time business.

Leaving a stable corporate career to pursue entrepreneurship was not without risk. Palmisciano has openly discussed the financial challenges he faced in the company's early years, but persistence and a clear mission helped Ranger Up grow into a nationally recognized brand.

Building More Than an Apparel Company

Although Ranger Up is widely known for its military-inspired clothing, the company has always focused on something larger than apparel.

Its products often feature themes related to military history, patriotism, leadership, fitness, and humor that resonate with veterans, active-duty service members, and military supporters. Over time, Ranger Up expanded into digital media, storytelling, and partnerships that celebrate military culture and the veteran community.

The company has demonstrated how a clear brand identity can help a business stand out in a competitive marketplace.

Supporting Veteran Entrepreneurs

One of Ranger Up's most unique initiatives was its Vetrepreneur Program, launched in 2014.

Rather than simply hiring veterans, the company created a program designed to help them become entrepreneurs. Participants worked with Ranger Up for a year before receiving mentorship and support as they launched their own businesses.

The initiative reflected the founders' belief that veterans possess valuable leadership, discipline, and problem-solving skills that translate well into business ownership.

Expanding Into Entertainment

Ranger Up also ventured beyond retail.

In 2015, the company partnered with fellow veteran-owned business Article 15 Clothing to produce the independent film Range 15, a zombie comedy created by and for the military community. The film was largely crowdfunded and featured numerous veterans, Medal of Honor recipients, and military personalities. It premiered at the GI Film Festival and demonstrated how veteran-owned businesses could collaborate on creative projects outside their traditional industries.

Lessons for Entrepreneurs

Ranger Up's journey offers several valuable lessons for aspiring business owners.

Start with a community you understand. The founders built products for a community they had personally served.

Take calculated risks. Growing the company required leaving a secure corporate career to pursue a long-term vision.

Build a recognizable brand. Ranger Up developed a strong identity that extended beyond its products.

Invest in others. Through mentorship and entrepreneurship programs, the company sought to create opportunities for fellow veterans.

Why Veteran-Owned Businesses Matter

Veteran-owned businesses continue to play an important role in the American economy.

Military service often develops qualities that are valuable in entrepreneurship, including leadership, adaptability, teamwork, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure.

Companies like Ranger Up demonstrate how those experiences can translate into successful businesses while continuing to support and strengthen veteran communities.

Looking Ahead

Nearly two decades after its founding, Ranger Up remains a well-known name within the military and veteran community.

Its story is about more than apparel. It is about taking military experience, embracing entrepreneurship, and creating opportunities for others along the way.

As our Veteran-Owned Business Spotlight series continues, we will highlight additional veteran-owned companies whose founders continue to make a positive impact through innovation, leadership, and service.
